Overview
Curation is about shaping how artwork appears on your group website. Good curation creates a cohesive experience for visitors while showcasing the diversity of your members' work.
Organising Strategies
There is no single right way to organise a group website. Here are approaches that work well:
- By subject: Group artwork by subject matter or concept (e.g., "Landscapes," "Portraiture," "Abstract"). Works well when you want to highlight the range of styles in your group.
- By medium: Organise by material or technique (e.g., "Oil Painting," "Photography," "Ceramics"). Good for groups with diverse practices.
- By exhibition: Create collections for specific shows or events (e.g., "Spring 2026 Show," "Members' Choice"). Ideal for galleries and exhibition-focused groups.
- By artist: Let each artist's own collections drive the organisation. Best for collectives where individual identity is central.
You can combine approaches, for example, website-owned themed collections alongside artist-owned personal collections.
Managing the Gallery Index Page
The gallery index page is where visitors browse your collections. You control what appears here and in what order.
- Reorder collections: Go to Collections and drag them into the display order you want. Featured or current collections work well near the top.
- Remove collections from this site: Collections with no artwork, or collections you are not ready to show, can be switched to Remove from this site in their settings. Switch them back with Show on this site whenever you want them visible again.
Reordering Collections
The order of collections on the gallery index page matters. Put your strongest or most current work first:
- Go to Collections in the admin dashboard.
- Drag collections into the order you want.
- The order saves automatically.
Tips for a Cohesive Presentation
- Set cover images intentionally. The cover image for each collection is the first thing visitors see. Choose images that represent the collection well and look good together on the gallery index page.
- Keep collection names clear. Use descriptive names that help visitors understand what they will find. Avoid inside references or abbreviations.
- Review regularly. As members submit new work, revisit your collection organisation. A website that evolves feels alive.
- Balance variety and coherence. A group website benefits from showing diverse work, but too many small collections can feel scattered. Aim for a manageable number of well-populated collections.
- Feature seasonal or topical work. Move timely collections to the top of the gallery index page and rotate them as new work comes in.
